Boone, NC Restoration & Enhancement

THI worked to reclaim exposed roads and trails, and enhance and restore both aquatic and upland habitat on 1,100 scenic acres for a progressive sustainable development offering green living near the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Residents share preservation concerns and eco-consciousness, enjoying naturally-inspired living.

Despite its beauty, Wilkes County, North Carolina is not without environmental challenges as it averages 50 inches of precipitation per year, and clay soils on steeper slopes can be highly erodible when exposed.  Old logging roads and trails in these drainages eroded during heavy rain events, filling streams with silt and harming water quality.  Plans called for sparkling mountain streams and productive trout fisheries without unsightly signs of installation.

Miles of stream, once so deteriorated they ran brown with silt, now run clear, even after major rain events.  Wild trout populations are rebounding, animals and birds such as deer, songbirds and wild turkey are numerous. Stream restoration along with the creation of new lakes and trout ponds provide improved habitat values for fish and wildlife, along with top-rated recreational fishing and wildlife viewing opportunities for residents.
