Lake Erie College Equine Center

Located on a gently sloping site with an expansive view of the lake, Lake Erie College’s Equestrian Center is home to their well-known Equine Studies Program. Having outgrown their current facilities, LEC hired FSC affiliate Blackburn Architects to renovate their existing indoor arena and build a new arena, barns, classrooms, show areas, service buildings and paddocks, effectively doubling their capacity. To allow for the most paddock space possible, the new arena, barns, show and educational spaces were attached to the existing arena and connected to each other. This would also protect people and horses from brisk breezes off Lake Erie, especially during the cold winter months. To scale down the massing of the large proposed buildings, the barns and support spaces were broken down into smaller units that gave the impression of buildings on a more human scale, while still being functionally connected.
