Little Mountain Ranch
Highland County, Virginia
Client: Private Client
Acreage: 1,800
Completed: 2006
The vision for the 1800 acre Little Mountain Ranch was to create a multi-functional
retreat for the owner; a place of respite and recreation designed to meet the needs
of a growing family today and into the future. McKee Carson cultivated this vision
in a master plan that employs conservation easements, enhances ecologically sensitive
areas, and introduces new rural recreational pursuits, which can be enjoyed by family,
friends and visitors alike.
The master planning process began with a comprehensive analysis of the site's
geographic, cultural, and historical context. Resource maps and narratives of
Highland County were chronicled and site analyses conducted on local ecology, plant
communities, terrain and solar aspect. Evaluation of the site's opportunities and
constraints associated with the programmatic goals led to further exploration and
revelation of the site's unique character. A thorough understanding of the natural
and cultural influences, site context, existing conditions and programmatic goals
all contributed to the unique landscape language that was developed for this master
plan.
In order to revive the ranch's trout habitat, Field Sport Concepts affiliate Trout
Headwaters, Inc. participated in the evaluation of riparian and river restoration
efforts for a one mile stretch of river with in the property boundary.
