Highland County, Virginia
Client: Private Client
Acreage: 1,800
Completed: 2006
The vision for the 1,800 acre Little Mountain Ranch was to create a multi-functional retreat for the owner; a place of respite and recreation designed to meet the needs of a growing family today and into the future. Field Sport Concepts incorporated this vision into a master plan that employs a conservation easement, enhances ecologically sensitive areas, and introduces new rural recreational pursuits, which can be enjoyed by family, friends and visitors alike.
The master planning process began with a comprehensive analysis of the site’s geographic, cultural, and historical context. Resource maps and narratives of Highland County were chronicled and site analyses conducted on local ecology, plant communities, terrain and solar aspect. Evaluation of the site’s opportunities and constraints associated with programmatic goals led to a master plan that seeks to express a rigorous understanding of the the site’s unique character.
In order to revive the ranch’s trout habitat, Field Sport Concepts affiliate Trout Headwaters, Inc. participated in the evaluation of riparian and river restoration efforts for a one mile stretch of river within the property boundary.
