One of the fastest growing sectors of outdoor activity is shooting sports. While this broad category includes events for pistols, rifles and shotguns, by far, the vast majority of attention to date has been focused on shotgun sports. Four basic formats currently exist within shotgun sports; they are trap, skeet, 5-Stand and sporting clays. Within each format, shooters have developed a variety of course configurations, target presentations and games, all of which combine to make this sport a truly dynamic and rewarding pastime for the sportsman and sportswoman. The first three are shot on a range, while sporting clays is typically shot on a par cour, or course, with a series of shooting stations arranged along a path. For this reason, and the fact that each station presents the shooter with a different challenge, sporting clays has come to be referred to as "golf with a gun."

For the most part, shooting sport facilities historically have been largely relegated to remote areas and managed by private clubs that catered almost exclusively to shooters. The past several decades have seen not only an evolution in the sport, but also commensurate growth in participation. Today, many resorts and high-end communities have developed shooting venues as part of their amenity offering. Given conscientious siting, these ranges and courses can be very non-intrusive as shooting times are scheduled respectful of other nearby activity. Daily use is usually light, but competitive events held at the finer venues can be very lucrative for the host facility.
